What happened to Sofonias Asrat? Update on the case

The Addis Ababa Police have announced the capture of previously unidentified criminals involved in a violent carjacking incident, following an intense investigation conducted over the last 48 hours.

Young Sofonias Asrat was tragically murdered on March 24, 2016, around 8:00 PM near Nahom Hotel in sub-city Ward 1, after being ambushed by three unidentified individuals while heading to Bole Michael. The police investigative and scrutiny team, set up to follow the case, confirmed their involvement through diligent inquiry.

The culprits, having premeditated the crime, approached the driver under the guise of needing transport services. After abducting him, they strangled him to death, dumping his body in Kaliti, sub-city Ward 5, along the road leading to Abo Church from the drivers’ training area. They fled with the victim’s Hyundai Vitz, license plate code ‘2A 93488’, including two mobile phones.

Through rigorous investigation, the police were able to deduce that the perpetrators were attempting to sell the stolen vehicle. By continuing the probe, they identified and apprehended the three main suspects attempting to sell the car in a secluded location within Bole, sub-city Ward 12, Bole Bulbula area, along with the recovered stolen car and two mobile phones.

The police’s meticulous investigation and follow-up have successfully identified and detained the three principal perpetrators and their accomplices within 48 hours.

The Addis Ababa Police have assured the public that the investigation is concluding and that the judicial process will soon disclose the outcomes to the public.
